I don’t wanna and you can’t make me. Also known as Monday.

My alarm went off yesterday and I thought, I really don’t want to get out of bed. It’s warm and cozy. The window was cracked and I could hear it raining, which is a lovely sound to fall back asleep to. I was just about to when my second alarm went off.

Just for the record, I am terrible with time. I have 4 alarms set for weekdays. I have to have a watch on or I can barely function. I have clocks all over the house. All of my clocks are at least 5 minutes fast. It drives the Colbster nuts because he never knows what time it really is. 

So as my second alarm went off I pulled myself out of bed, whimpered to myself and then thought about going into work late so I could go back to sleep. Fortunately, my coffee maker is programable and I could hear it finishing up my morning brew so I soldiered on.

Honestly, until I can wake my brain up, coffee is really all that motivates at 5am. After my coffee though, then I’m all about looking forward to my day. I think about all the things in my day that I have to do and how to accomplish them.

Getting motivated to get up and get on with your day can be tough but I’ve got a few tips for dealing with mornings:

  • Find something that you can look forward to each day.

On Mondays, I work out with my trainer at Seattle Fitness, Jerome. I adore him. He is hilarious and also pure evil. Mondays are the most painful workouts of the week but I know I’m going to laugh the entire hour. Plan something especially wonderful or entertaining on Mondays so you aren’t tempted to go back to bed. You can sleep when you’re dead.

  • Work with people you like.

I work with an awesome team. I adore them. I have a few folks who I’m really close with but ultimately, every person in the office is someone I’m excited to get the opportunity to work with. They’re funny and engaged and really hard working. They teach me constantly. Don’t spend 40+ hours a week with people you can’t stand or can just barely tolerate. Find your people.

  • Do something each day that isn’t work.

Blog, sing, read, take a class, workout (just because work is in the word doesn’t necessarily mean it is work – see comments above about Jerome). Do anything that fills your cup or brings you joy. If you live and breathe a job, then you’ve got nothing but the grind to look forward to. On my ferry ride, I stare out the window or read. I also sing loudly and often off key in my car and the shower, just because it feels good.

  • Be grateful for the little things.

I love my job, my partner, my family and my dog – my cats are alright too I guess. I live on the water and get to fall asleep every night to the sound of the waves on the shore. On a Monday morning or any morning that starts with an alarm, I could care less about this crap. I hate everything. My life sucks and everything is horrible and there’s no humanity left in the world. Then I hear my coffee maker brewing away and things aren’t so bad. There are times when it’s hard to be grateful and appreciative for all the good things no matter how many good things you have. It is still important to take a moment and say thanks to my little $20 coffee maker that turns on all by itself and allows me to get to the point when I can remember to be thankful for the rest of my life.

Life is too short to spend it in bed but getting out of bed can prove to be quite challenging. Find things that help get out from under the covers and into the world.
